Building your Kilt

Whether you are building your masterpiece kilt for wear at wedding, as part of a uniform, competing in Highland Athletics, or just for pride, we will need to know some things from you.

What tartan do you want used in making your kilt?

Please be specific.  We can get just about any kind of tartan, but be aware that most Clans have several tartan choices…Modern, Ancient, Dress, Hunting, etc.  For a great list of traditional tartans check this link: http://www.tartansauthority.com/web/site/home/home.asp. Or check out our Balmoral 65/35 Polyester/Viscose Tartans from Marton Mills.

And don’t forget that even if you hate your Clan’s tartan or if you don’t belong to a Scottish Clan, there are many military, district, and corporate tartans available.

Neo Kilt measurement instructions:

Your kilt measurements are very likely different than the measurements for your jeans or trousers, so please take the time to get accurate measurements! Not only are your measurements what we used to calculate the price of your kilt, correct measurements will ensure a great fitting kilt!

  1. Ok get a cloth measuring tape and a friend - you want accuracy.
  2. First, you want to measure the circumference of your body  - around your belly button...it might be bigger than your jeans size.  This is your Waist measurement.
  3. Then  measure the widest part of your body between your hips and knees.  For most of us this should be around the buttocks and lower hips, but if you are a power lifter or a bicyclist and have giant thighs measure there.  This is your Hip measurement.
  4. Now for the length standing straight up get your assistant you want them to measure from 1 inch above your Waist measurement to the top of your knee caps.  This is your Length measurement.

Pleated to the line or the Sett?

Pleating to the line or the Sett makes a difference in how much tartan we need to use to make your kilt.

  1. Pleated to the line shows a representation of the colors in the kilt

  2. Pleated to the Sett means that the pleats are set in a way to show the entire pattern of the tartan.

  3. Box pleating possible, contact us for more details.
